Marine deaths: Cpl. Jared M. Shoemaker, 29, of Tulsa, Okla., was killed Monday in Anbar province. He was assigned to the Marine Forces Reserve 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Broken Arrow, Okla.
Lance Cpl. Eric P. Valdepenas, 21, of Seekonk, Mass., was killed Monday in Anbar province. He was assigned to the Marine Forces Reserves 1st Battalion, 25th Marine Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Ayer, Mass.
Pvt. Ryan E. Miller, 21, of Gahanna, Ohio, and Lance Cpl. Philip A. Johnson, 19, of Hartford, Conn., were killed Sunday in Anbar province. They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Lance Cpl. Cliff K. Golla, 21, of Charlotte, N.C., was killed Friday in Anbar province. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, Camp Lejeune.
Lance Cpl. Shane P. Harris, 23, of Las Vegas, N.M., was killed Sunday in Anbar province. Harris was assigned to the 3rd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Marine Division, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms.
Navy death: Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher G. Walsh, 30, of St. Louis, was killed Monday in Anbar province. Walsh was assigned to the Reserve 3rd Battalion, 24th Regiment, 4th Marine Division, Bridgetown, Mo.
Army deaths: Sgt. 1st Class Richard J. Henkes II, 32, of Portland, Ore., died Sunday of injuries from an explosive detonated near his vehicle.
Pfc. Nicholas A. Madaras, 19, of Wilton, Conn., died Sunday in Baquba of injuries suffered when an explosive detonated near his vehicle.
Sgt. Ralph N. Porras, 36, of Merrill, Mich., and Army Pfc. Justin W. Dreese, 21, of Northumberland, Pa., died Saturday in Yusufiyah from mortar fire.
Staff Sgt. Angel D. Mercado-Velazquez, 24, died Friday in Yusufiyah from mortar fire.
Sgt. Matthew J. Vosbein, 30, of Metairie, La., died Aug. 29 in Yusufiyah when an explosive detonated near his patrol.
Cpl. Shannon L. Squires, 25, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Aug. 28 in Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio from injuries suffered along Main Supply Route Tampa, Iraq on April 21, when an explosive detonated near his vehicle.
Pfc. Hannah L. Gunterman, 20, of Redlands died Monday in Taji in a nonhostile incident.
Abu Ghraib editorial: The Yakima Herald-Republic newspaper in Washington state wrote in an editorial:
“Iraq's now-infamous prison at Abu Ghraib is now empty and it's about time. Iraqi officials have reported that U.S. authorities finished moving about 3,600 prisoners from the prison in recent days with most going to U.S.-run detention centers – Camp Cropper, near Baghdad International Airport, and Camp Bucca near Umm Qasr in southern Iraq. Some were released. ...
“Abu Ghraib had become synonymous with torture, first under Saddam Hussein, and then – incredibly – under American occupation when photos surfaced in April 2004 of U.S. troops abusing Iraqi prisoners there.”
