NFL head coaches

If you're into job security, don't become an NFL head coach. Nearly a third (10) of the league's 32 teams changed coaches in the offseason, and only twice over the past 10 offseason has there been fewer than five changes. Here is a year-by-year look at the turnover:


1997 (11 teams opened the season with a new head coach)

Atlanta Dan Reeves replaced June Jones

Cincinnati Bruce Coslet replaced David Shula

Detroit Bobby Ross replaced Wayne Fontes

Giants Jim Fassel replaced Dan Reeves

Jets Parcells replaced Rich Kotite

New England Pete Carroll replaced Bill Parcells

New Orleans Mike Ditka replaced Jim Mora (& interim Rick Venturi)

Oakland Joe Bugel replaced Mike White

St. Louis Dick Vermeil replaced Rich Brooks

San Diego Kevin Gilbride replaced Bobby Ross

San Francisco Steve Mariucci replaced George Seifert


1998 (four teams opened the season with a new head coach)

Buffalo Wade Phillips for Marv Levy (retired)

Indianapolis Jim Mora for Lindy Infante
