Jerry Magee's NFL picks

September 7, 2006

Teams listed first selected to cover wagering lines. Home teams in caps.

TONIGHT

STEELERS (minus 4) vs. Dolphins: Never mind Big Ben's status. World champs at home irresistible.

SUNDAY

GIANTS (plus 3½) vs. Colts: “The Manning Bowl.” The big brother is better than the little brother, but the little brother is at home.

TITANS (minus 3) vs. Jets: Two 4-12 teams a year ago. Not much difference, so take home team.

Broncos (minus 3½) vs. RAMS: Over the past 10 years, Denver's opening-month record is a league-best 28-10. Shanahan is a genius.

Bills (plus 8) vs. PATRIOTS: Week's widest spread – but teams never are more equal than in Week 1, when nobody has momentum.

BUCS (minus 3) vs. Ravens: Count on Chucky thinking of something.

Bengals (plus 3) vs. CHIEFS: Approach this one carefully. Palmer's knee makes the afternoon iffy.

LIONS (plus 3½) vs. Seahawks: Martz's designs will get the hosts enough points to fit within this number.

PANTHERS (minus 4½) vs. Falcons: Hosts are solid everywhere.

Eagles (minus 3½) vs. TEXANS: Been hearing some things about the Texans. None of them are favorable.

BROWNS (minus 3) vs. Saints: Have you seen Brees throw deep this summer? We haven't.

Cowboys (plus 3) vs. JAGUARS: T.O. not only guy playing for Parcells. Is he?

Bears (minus 3) vs. PACKERS: Chicago's offense isn't much, but Green Bay's defense is worse.

CARDINALS (minus 7½) vs. 49ers: Going into their fancy new digs should serve to invigorate the Arizonans.

MONDAY

Chargers (minus 3) vs. RAIDERS: Marty knows how to get teams ready for openers. He's won 11 times.

Vikings (plus 5½) vs. REDSKINS: Johnson, the Minnesota QB, won't be making many mistakes.
