CRIME WATCH: SOUTH EDITION
Suspect sought in fatal shooting

September 7, 2006

LINCOLN PARK – Police have identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man Tuesday night in Lincoln Park.

The victim, Filemoni Lauina, 23, of San Diego was killed at 8:45 p.m. on Logan Avenue near Euclid Avenue, San Diego police said.

Lauina was fighting with another man who left and then returned and shot him, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead within an hour.

The man being sought is Omar Luis Vargas, 26. He is described as Hispanic, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 250 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Vargas is known to frequent City Heights, Lincoln Park and Escondido and may be driving a white 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse with license plate 5REB029, police said.

He should be considered armed and dangerous, and police asked that anyone with information not try to contact him.

Instead, they ask the public to call 911, the San Diego Police Department at (619) 521-2000 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.
