CRIME WATCH: CITY EDITION
Suspect sought in fatal shooting

September 7, 2006

LINCOLN PARK – Police have identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 23-year-old man Tuesday night in Lincoln Park.

The victim, Filemoni Lauina, 23, of San Diego was killed at 8:45 p.m. on Logan Avenue near Euclid Avenue, San Diego police said.

Lauina was fighting with another man who left and then returned and shot him, police said. He was taken to a hospital, where he was declared dead within an hour.

The man being sought is Omar Luis Vargas, 26. He is described as Hispanic, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 250 pounds with brown eyes and black hair.

Vargas is known to frequent City Heights, Lincoln Park and Escondido and may be driving a white 1993 Mitsubishi Eclipse with license plate 5REB029, police said.

He should be considered armed and dangerous, and police asked that anyone with information not try to contact him.

Instead, they ask the public to call 911, the San Diego Police Department at (619) 521-2000 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS. Callers may remain anonymous.

Man shot in head isn't expected to live

COLLEGE AREA – A man found shot in the head on 70th Street last night was hospitalized but not expected to survive, San Diego police said.

Homicide investigators took over the case while the man remains on life support.

A neighbor called police shortly before 8 p.m. after hearing a gunshot on 70th near Mohawk Street. Officers found the wounded man outside some residences.

No one came forward as a witness, so officers had no description of the shooter or any getaway vehicle. Police said no gun or shell casings were found nearby.

Three arrested in assault, robbery

GOLDEN HILL – Three men were arrested Tuesday on suspicion of assaulting and robbing a man at gunpoint in his B Street home twice in four days, San Diego police said.

Patrol officers captured the three after a woman reported that her father, Chrisha Greene, 36, was being beaten by a group of intruders at their residence on B Street near 33rd Street, police Lt. John Leas said.

Police arrived shortly after 9:30 p.m. to find one 18-year-old man fleeing the house carrying a shotgun, investigators said. They arrested him without incident.

Officers evacuated some neighbors from their homes and surrounded Greene's house in case he was still held against his will. Shortly before midnight, police used a bullhorn to order those inside to come out. Two men, brothers ages 28 and 29, came out peacefully.

After making the arrests, officers were unable to find Greene. Police found him and his daughter yesterday afternoon, unharmed, Leas said.

Detectives believe the same three men, armed with a shotgun, robbed Greene of cash and his ATM card about daybreak Sunday, Leas said. The three were booked for investigation of robbery and false imprisonment.
