Since the start of August, Clay Hensley has been the Padres' most effective starting pitcher.
But you couldn't tell it by the right-handed sinkerballer's 2-3 record.
Last night, for example, Hensley held Colorado to three hits over seven innings. But when he departed for a pinch hitter, the game was still scoreless.
In five starts and one relief appearance since Aug. 1, Hensley has allowed 10 runs on 38 hits in 412/3 innings – an earned-run average of 2.16.
But the Padres have scored only 13 runs over that span while Hensley was in the game. On Aug. 14, Hensley lost 1-0 to San Francisco on an unearned run.
Since the end of July, Hensley's ERA has dropped from 4.46 to 3.87 – its third-lowest mark of the season. But the Padres are only 3-4 in the games Hensley has worked.
