Illegal immigrant admits molestation

November 16, 2007

SAN DIEGO COURTS: An illegal immigrant accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy in Poway pleaded guilty yesterday to charges of lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14.

Jesus Mora Nava, 30, faces a maximum of 16 years in prison and deportation at his sentencing, scheduled for Jan. 3. He was being held without bail.

Nava, who is from Mexico, was arrested July 17 in Poway, the same day he befriended the boy and assaulted him, said prosecutor Dino Paraskevopoulos. Nava gave the boy alcohol and took him to an encampment in a wooded area, Paraskevopoulos said.

A sheriff's helicopter with a heat-seeking sensor was used to find Nava after the boy reported the assault to a Poway man who was jogging in the area.

The boy, police detectives, doctors and other witnesses were prepared to testify at a preliminary hearing yesterday, but it was not necessary once Nava changed his plea.

Nava also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of using false documents to conceal his citizenship status.

Nava's arrest sparked a crackdown on illegal encampments in Poway, authorities said.

Collision fatal for 84-year-old driver

RANCHO BERNARDO: An 84-year-old woman died after a collision at Pomerado Court and Pomerado Road yesterday morning.

The victim was identified by the county Medical Examiner's office as Arlyne Dryer.

She was driving from her home on Pomerado Court about 10:15 a.m., stopped at a stop sign, then pulled out in front of a northbound Buick Century, San Diego police said. Police said Dryer didn't see the Buick, and its 20-year-old driver couldn't stop in time to avoid hitting her Toyota Camry. Dryer was pinned in the wreckage until freed by firefighters.

She was taken to a hospital but died about 12:40 p.m. The other driver also was taken to a hospital, but police did not give information on his injuries.
