Opening Day in San Diego is always an occasion thick with nostalgia and ceremony: fireworks, first pitches and decorative bunting. Last night, the honor of singing the national anthem went to Escondido fire Capt. Eric Souza, one of many firefighters who were saluted at Petco Park for their work during the October wildfires.
On the field, reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Peavy pitched seven shutout innings to lead the Padres to a 4-0 season-opening victory over the Astros before a sell-out crowd of 44,965.
