Young is starting the second game of the season for the second straight year. He has led the major leagues in batting-average-against each of the past two seasons with a .206 mark in 2007 and a .192 average last year. Although this is his third season with the Padres, Young has not faced the Astros since he was with Texas on June 25, 2005. He is 2-0 lifetime against the Astros with a 3.75 ERA. Backe made only five starts with the Astros last year after ligament replacement surgery in his elbow on Sept. 7, 2006. He is 2-1 lifetime against the Padres with a 2.45 ERA over 18-1/3 innings.
