Salmon fishing restrictions OK'd

MONTEREY – State wildlife regulators yesterday voted to ban almost all recreational fishing of salmon in California rivers this year to protect declining chinook stocks.

The California Fish and Game Commission adopted the restrictions at its meeting in Monterey, but it voted to allow limited fishing on the Sacramento River.

4.1 quake reported near desert town

ANZA – A magnitude-4.1 earthquake hit near this desert town southeast of Palm Springs yesterday afternoon. No damage or injuries were reported.

The quake occurred at 3:38 p.m. and was centered 15 miles southeast of Anza in Riverside County, seismologists reported.

Melee at school involves hundreds

LOS ANGELES – About 600 students at a South Los Angeles high school were involved in what appeared to be a gang-related fight yesterday, and the school was locked down and then dismissed early after the lunchtime brawl, police said.

Campus officers at Locke High School broke up the melee, and four students were arrested. Officials said several students were injured, none seriously.
